The experience, location and definition of work have undergone profound changes, as our economy has become more focused on services and knowledge. Flexibility, work-life balance and creative, informal ways of working are now central facts of business life. While many of the more outlandish predictions for the future of work have failed to reach beyond particular dotcom-style industries, work is increasingly penetrated by social relationships and social networking technologies. The digital habits of the emerging generation of employees will prove a particular challenge to managers, and could come into conflict with the business demands that go with a tougher economic climate.
